Article Abstract:

Education and training are important aspects of the British manufacturing industry. However, studies revealed that the country requires lower entry skill levels and implements less training through prescribed courses than worldwide averages. UK also ranks lower than the rest of Europe in many individual skills. Imbalances in the system such as a lack of training funds also characterize the UK system of training. The government is responding to these challenges with the publication of a guide to achieving world class standards and by urging companies to implement more training programs.

Learning curve

Article Abstract:

Questions have been raised over the UK Engineering Council's revision of its Standards and Routes to Registration in 1997. The standards outline the education and experience needed to be certified as chartered or incorporated engineer and engineering technician. Among the changes were increasing the educational requirement for attaining chartered status from three to four years and imposing minimum levels of education for new engineering students.
