Let there be light

Article Abstract:

Lasers are suitable for many manufacturing applications as they offer a highly controllable heating beam. Applications include cutting and welding, surface treatment of metals, alloying and hardening, and they have also been used to strip paint from airframes. Laser Ecosse offers a feedback system for its laser ranges which ensures a high quality first time cut, and Fanuc is researching the use of lasers on materials such as aluminium, copper and brass, which were previously difficult to process with lasers.

Light touch

Article Abstract:

Several developments in laser marking technology are discussed. Laser marking is being employed in the electronics industry for putting part numbers, batch codes and product information on components such as computer chips, printed circuit boards and connectors. This leaves a permanent mark and is a method for detecting counterfeit products. Laser marking systems have usually employed Nd:YAG lasers. However, CO2 lasers are now being used for a wide range of materials because of their longer wavelength.

The age of light

Article Abstract:

Application and development are the two main challenges facing laser technology since its introduction in the 1960s. The first challenge has been met with the creation of laser applications such as CD players, bar code readers and 3D photography. On the other hand, the continued development of laser technology can be ensured through special courses for engineers, collaborations between businesses and research centers, and technology transfer through feasibility studies.
