Little green molecules

Article Abstract:

Chemists have invented a new class of enzymelike catalysts, called tetra-amide macrocylic ligand activators (TAMLs), which can destroy some of the worst pollutants before they get into the environment. TAMLs have reduced staining and hazardous chemicals when applied to the wastewater from pulp mills and these catalysts can also be used to disinfect drinking water and clean up contamination from bioterror attacks.

Life in balance

Article Abstract:

Our bodies and those of other oxygen-breathing organisms are like microbial mats seeking redox equilibrium. H2S, which is produced naturally by the human body, enables our cells to remain in the optimal chemically unstable environment from which we evolved and it also acts as a natural trigger for protective biological arrest.
