Lost at sea

Article Abstract:

Government funding for underwater research is severely limited. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration justifies this situation by stating that other projects are more important at the present. The future of underwater research is bleak, given the mood of Republicans to cut budgets.

Wavelet data compression

Wavelets is a mathematical theory for encoding information in a compact manner. The resulting data compression has many potential applications, from the storage of fingerprint files to the broadcasting of a dual-image television signals for standard and high-definition sets.

Six physicists have formed Prediction Co in an effort to use the science of chaos to accurately predict the performance of the stock market. The science of chaos is based on the discovery that apparently random behavior can be described by mathematical formulas.
