Making light work

Sandia National Laboratories has adopted the use of a laser-engineered net shaping (LENS) technique in the manufacture of highly accurate metal components. The company is also studying the possibility of using LENS in systems weaponry and other commercial applications.

Russian scientists claim to have developed a method of detecting ballistic-missile submarines under water with microwave reflections from the service of the ocean. The discovery could limit the usefulness of ballistic-missile submarines as a deterrent.
