Mathematicians set the pace

Article Abstract:

The low quality of mathematics and science education in the US as reflected in the National Assessment of Educational Progress report prompted American mathematics teachers to raise the standards of mathematics education. The new standards are listed in the 'Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics' published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A parallel three-stage development program for science education is underway. The accomplishment of its first stage is reflected in the report, 'Science for All Americans,' by F. James Rutherford and Andrew Ahlgren.

The science of learning math and science

Article Abstract:

Today's main focus in math and science education is on the understanding of cognitive processes involved in learning. According to the constructivist view, the mind has internal constructs of things which can be used to form new ones with the addition of data. Some theorists prefer the situated cognition theory which holds that thinking is not a process but an interaction between a person and a particular situation. On the other hand, some experts believe that people have an inherent preparedness for certain knowledge such as math and language.

What Can We Really Learn from TIMSS?

Article Abstract:

The Third International Mathematics and Science Study aims to improve the quality of science and math education in schools so students are more prepared for future college courses. The study has discovered that science and math scores are low for fourth through eighth graders, with a need for improvement in the way they are taught.
