Meltdown: A raft of new EU directives for increased plastics recycling promises to put pressure on all plastics producers, from the automotive sector to electronics and packaging

Article Abstract:

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is leading development of environmental management standards. The main initiative in the automotive sector is the European Commission's Draft Directive on end of life (EOL) vehicles, which proposes that by 2002 a maximum of 15% of a car's scrap weight can go to landfill, reduced to 5% by 2015.

Panasonic, operating as Matsushita Communication Industrial UK, has a mobile phone assembly plant in Berkshire where 700 people are employed. The plant makes around 500,000 handsets a month and production is set to increase because of rising demand.
