Minority Postdocs Are Rare, Independent Breed

Article Abstract:

There are very few minority postdoctoral researchers in the U.S. It is estimated that only 124 African Americans are currently doing postdoctoral research in biomedical fields, and most of them are being funded by the United Negro College Fund. The best way to change this situation is to begin encouraging more minority high school students to pursue science.

Cheap Labor Is Key to U.S. Research Productivity

Article Abstract:

A first-year postdoctoral researcher is paid around $26,000, and does not receive benefits. Some institutions pay more in order to attract top researchers, but overall, researchers agree that the pay levels are a problem.
