More than green acres

Article Abstract:

The economies of rural areas can be improved by introducing leisure-related businesses. Tourism, retirement and recreation are among the fastest growing business sectors in the US. These sectors require amenities such as scenery, atmosphere and space which can only be found in rural areas. In the case of France, which is the number-one foreign tourist destination in the world, it is not only the cultural ambience of Paris that is marketed to 60 million foreign visitors yearly, but also the country's rural countryside. France has become adept at promoting its poorer regions as tourist destinations.

Venezuela navigates reform's twists, turns

Article Abstract:

Venezuela suffered from the adverse effects of economic liberalization that plagued other Latin American countries. The early successes of the government's liberalization program was undermined by the banking crisis and recession in 1994 which led to rising unemployment, inflation and the loss of investor confidence. However, the country has begun its recovery with the sale of larges tracts of land to international oil companies in 1995.
