Moving targets: ensuring effective supply chain operations requires keeping track of constantly shifting performance benchmarks

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers of mass-produced products must ensure that they can deliver their goods at the right time and in right quantities. The critical factor in the supply chain is management of information, with delivery now regarded as a subsidiary function. Alex Macdonald, a management consultant, believes that the old, rigid linear commutation chain is becoming obsolete and is being replaced by a virtual supply chain that allows manufacturers to monitor and manage the whole network from production through to delivery of finished goods.
