New faculty grants program expands role of STA agency

Article Abstract:

The Development Corporation of Japan has launched the Core Research for Evolutional Science and Technology (CREST) as an alternative method for funding science in Japan. CREST provides 5-year grants to winners of a national competition and enables scientists to work free of bureaucratic interference.

Japan trolls for global support of deepest drilling vessel

Article Abstract:

Japan Marine Science and Technology Center plans to build the world's deepest scientific drilling ship, hoping to lead an Ocean Drilling in the 21st Century program, to extend the current Ocean Drilling Program. Though scientists worldwide are interested, international funding is uncertain.

"Super" Japanese site gears up to solve neutrino puzzle

Article Abstract:

Japan's Super-Kamiokande, a 50,000-metric-ton neutrino detector will begin filling up with water in Dec 1995. Physicists hope the tank, located one kilometer below ground in a lead mine to shield it from background radiation, will produce decisive evidence on whether the neutrino has mass.
