New predictors of disease

Article Abstract:

The autoantibodies manufactured by the immune system appear many years before visible symptoms of disease, suggesting that screening for these molecules can be used for predicting who is at risk of falling ill. These autoantibodies might serve as guides to the severity and progression of disease and might also warn of risk for some nonimmune disorders.

Autoimmune disease

Article Abstract:

Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes and lupus involve self-reactive lymphocytes that destroy the body's cells, mistaking them for foreign cells. Researchers are finding new gene and protein therapies to slow the progress of these autoimmune diseases.
