The new regulations by Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation mandate dam inspections of private dams by qualified engineers through the DCR's Office of Dam Safety. The private owners can hire registered professional engineers as inspectors. The new regulation increases the authority of state over private dam owners.

The research conducted on the deterioration of runways revealed that the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) caused by pavement deicers and concrete mix used in pavements is the main reason for this damage.
