New test catches drug-resistant TB in the spotlight

Article Abstract:

Scientists have developed a new method of testing for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) bacteria. A genetically engineered virus designed to produce luciferase is introduced into a TB culture. The TB culture is subsequently exposed to the chemical luciferin. Live TB bacteria containing the luciferase viruses emit light, while dead bacteria remain dark.

Researchers find the reset button for the fruit fly clock

Article Abstract:

Four teams have identified the protein timeless (TIM) as a light-mediated controller of the circadian clock in the fruit fly. When light destroys TIM early in the night during manufacture of PER and TIM, it delays the clock, and when it happens at the end of the night, the clock is advanced.

Shedding light on the ticking of internal timekeepers

Article Abstract:

Two recent breakthroughs in the study of circadian rhythms in plants are reported. By grafting the luciferase gene from fireflies into Arabidopsis, clock-mutants were identified by the out-of-synch glowing response to luciferin, and differences in responses to blue and red light were found.
