Nonlinear soil response - 1994 Northridge, California, earthquake

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to analyze the measured dynamic response at strong-motion stations in the 1994 Northridge, CA, earthquake. Results revealed that nonlinear soil response accounted for smaller horizontal peak accelerations at soft-soil sites. This reduction in peak horizontal acceleration is attributed to the seismic fluidization of granular soils. The study has also emphasized the need to examine ways of preventing seismic wave energy from penetrating the foundation-structure system to enhance structural control.

Analysis of pullout tests for planar reinforcements of soil

Article Abstract:

A new load-transfer behavior is proposed for pullout tests with extensible, planar reinforcement. The theory takes from equilibrium equations for plates in plane-strain compression derived from previous studies. The equilibrium equations, however, were criticized for failing to formulate the problem correctly. Shear-lag analysis of composite mechanics were modified to demonstrate existing problems.

Analysis of piles subjected to embankment induced lateral soil movements

Article Abstract:

Soil mechanics in piling techniques are explored, including field and laboratory experiments. Categories are displacement-based methods, pressure-based methods, the overall soil-pile-embankment response approach, and placement of piles prior to construction of the embankment.
