Pentagon Agency Thrives on In-Your-Face Science

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency was founded by Pres Eisenhower in 1958 as a way to circumvent normal military research and development procedures to better innovate and research projects. The agency has produced some excellent work, but has weaknesses. Plans to create more government agencies like it should be carefully considered.

Who's Balancing the Federal Research Portfolio and How?

Article Abstract:

As the federal government considers increasing spending on research and development, past spending practices are analyzed. Budgets have increased in certain fields but dropped in others. It is argued that funding should be equal in all fields so that new research opportunities are not missed. A history of federal funding is given.
