Pittsburgh goes international

Article Abstract:

The Pittsburgh International Airport construction project entailed the design of a unique airside building, extensive excavation to accommodate roadway construction and additional amenities and utilities. The engineers used passenger flow, systems operations, expansion and cost-effectiveness as design considerations. The 13-year project resulted in an airport with innovative features which eased up aircraft and passenger traffic and a cost-effective site drainage system. Project management techniques included daily design team coordination and mutual agreements with workers and retail establishments.

Wildlife, water shortage affect airport project

Article Abstract:

The Grand Canyon National Airport expansion project posed several problems for its engineers. First, construction had to be phased to ensure continuous operations in the existing terminal. Then, they had to secure permission to modify the buffer zone to eliminate plane landing difficulties. The engineers faced the added task of locating existing water and utility lines due to incomplete data and they had to make do with reuse water for the installation of the new lines. However, these problems have been ironed out and the project is schduled to start in May 1992.
