Plastic encapsulated microcircuits

Article Abstract:

Plastic encapsulated microelectronics (PEMs) are constructed in either surface-mount or through-hole configurations. PEMs provide several advantages over ceramic packages in terms of size, weight, performance, cost, reliability and availability. Plastics also have the advantage of better dielectric characteristics compared to ceramics. The reliability of PEMs has been a common problem. However, this has improved since the 1970s due to improvements in encapsulating materials, die passivation and manufacturing techniques.

Plastic gears

Article Abstract:

Plastic gears are becoming increasingly popular for many power transmission applications. They are cheaper and lighter than metal gears and their inertia is low. Unlubricated plastic gears are used in domestic and office products, such as photocopiers. University of Birmingham's School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering is working with Hatfield-based David Moulded Gears on plastic gear technology. The research is aimed at expanding the applications for plastic gears.

Unstable slopes get pinned with recycled plastic

Article Abstract:

This article reports about an innovative method of monitoring shallow slopes along highway embankments. Recycled plastic pins are driven into highway embankments and are wired to monitor strain, lateral movements, and deformations of the slopes.
