Principles of holistic medicine applied to infrastructure maintenance: a test case

Article Abstract:

The engineering industry generally dismisses the holistic approach with regard to infrastructure. However, the American Society of Civil Engineers embarked on a study to determine whether treating infrastructure as objects with sensitivities will enhance its maintenance and used the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City as a test case. The final recommendations ranged from changing the bridge's name, color and its surrounding neighborhood to increasing toll rates, careful handling and observing anniversaries.

Infrastructure investment builds economic muscle

Article Abstract:

Proper management of investment in public works is beneficial to a healthy economy. A nation's wealth and productivity growth is spurred on by public works which also discourages recessions. More investment is impeded by the country's financial constraints and public ignorance of the relation between infrastructure and economic prosperity. The aid of civil engineers is sought in providing leadership and technical know-how in attaining the solutions to infrastructure problems.
