Research needs related to forensic engineering of constructed facilities

Article Abstract:

The Research Committee of the Technical Council on Forensic Engineering conducted a survey to determine the research needs for constructed facilities not meeting performance standards. Although research needs varied depending on the respondents' field of specialty, specific research needs identified included the development of in situ monitoring for constructed facilities, information regarding the defects and degradation of construction materials and the prevention of water leaks in constructed facilities.

Are civil engineering graduates adequately informed on failure? A practitioner's view

Article Abstract:

The Education Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Technical Council on Forensic Engineering seeks to include the teaching of forensic engineering and failure of engineered facilities in civil engineering education to improve the students' understanding and perception of applied engineering. The inadequacy of courses dealing with construction failures in American civil engineering schools is coupled with the lack of instructors with adequate training and experience on the subject.

Civil engineering education through case studies of failures

Article Abstract:

Roberto Pietroforte has conducted case studies of failure analysis at the Worchester Polytechnic Institute. Despite the difficulty of conducting such studies, it was deemed the most effective way to introduce and use the examples. One of the objectives was to create an ASCE web site that can be used by students and teachers alike in the study of engineering failures. More researchers and practitioners can contribute to the goal by presenting case studies in various ways.
