Quantitative prediction of impact forces in elastomers

Article Abstract:

The impact forces and deflections resulting from drop tests of a mass with a flat impact surface onto flat pads of various elastometric materials were measured. It was shown that the forces could be predicted quantitatively with no adjustable parameters by using a theory whose inputs consist of the linear viscoelastic characteristics of the material. The theory is accurate for several elastometric solids such as polyvinyl chlorides, polyurethanes and polynorbornene.

Mechanics of biomacromolecular networks containing folded domains

Article Abstract:

Constitutive models for the large strain deformation of networks of modular macromolecules are developed building directly from statistical mechanics based models of the single molecule force-extension behavior. The proposed two-dimensional network can be applied to biological member skeletons and the three-dimensional network model emulates cytoskeletal networks, natural fibers, and soft biological tissues.

Characterization of the core properties of a shock absorbing composite

Article Abstract:

A study investigates the characteristics of compression of shock absorbing liquid composite by impact tests. The performance curves derived from accelerometer readings are similar to those taken from the pressure measurements.
