Reactions of ozone and hydroxyl radicals with serine

Article Abstract:

A study of ozone and hydroxyl radical reactions revealed that carbonyl and carboxylic acid byproducts containing one or two carbon atoms, which suggest the loss of a carbon from the original serine, resulted from reactions of ozone and serine in the presence of hydroxyl radical scavengers. Compounds with one, two and three carbon atoms, which suggest that the rupture of the original carbon backbone did not always occur, were detected in the reaction of ozone with serine under radical-promoting conditions.

Will economics reverse progress?

Article Abstract:

The costs of environmental protection will have an impact on economic well-being. The short-term effect on the environmental movement will be negative. The environment has been damaged by the subsidizing of the beef industry. The beef industry, however, is fighting against the promotion of a lower fat diet to reduce cardiovascular disease and protect the environment. Public interest groups, industry, educators and the government must work together to avoid negative consequences in the long run.

An agenda for change

Article Abstract:

Changes in the political structures of various countries including the US and the former USSR will have significant effects on the present environmental protection policies. World leaders, in order for the public to benefit from these changes, would have to understand that the issue of environmental protection is as important as those of nuclear arms reduction and economic development, thus, it must be properly addressed.
