Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) is subdivided into more than 150 economic regions, each with its own set of parameters which have significant impact on the shape of manufacturing in Europe. The development of manufacturing will continue to be fragmented within the European Union as long as the variations in national policies continue to exist. Many other factors such as the regional economy, and utilities and transportation infrastructure also affect the manufacturing process. Importance is given to high technology industries in all EU nations.

Manufactures in the world must tend to shift from a mass production philosophy to a more amenable and active 'lean manufacturing' atmosphere if they wish to compete on cost, quality and general market response. Lean manufacturing produces important demands for control systems through the product life cycle. Collapsed architectures, new technologies, high microcontrollers and custom circuity are new trends in leaner control system.
