Resistance in high-temperature superconductors: researchers are beginning to see how the motion of magnetic vortices in these materials can interfere with the flow of current

Article Abstract:

Recent research has added to the knowledge about the effects of various temperatures and magnetic-field conditions on the flux lines that cause resistance in high-temperature superconductors. The research could lead to more effective uses of ceramic superconductors.

The rise of optical switching

Article Abstract:

Optical fibers are being put into place to connect various locations, and to speed the transmission, but there is still a reliance on traditional electronic switches. Efforts to convert the switching operations to an optical mode are discussed.

Routing packets with light; the ultimate all-optical network will require dramatic advances in technologies that use one lightwave to imprint information on another

Article Abstract:

Fiber optical connections are being put into place, but the speed of fiber optics is being slowed by electronic switching equipment.Efforts to convert the Internet to a completely optical network are described.
