Science, social science, and the new paradigm

Article Abstract:

Recent reports have advocated dealing with industry's environmental problems with economic incentives and information rather than regulation. The EPA's ignorance of corporate decision-making behavior and market responses inhibits any movement toward an environmental strategy consisting of voluntary private sector measures. Government action so far has been focused on standards for emissions, effluents and technology. A social science research program on private sector behavior and how it can be influenced by the public sector is needed to assess the viability of an incentive-based strategy.

Energy taxes

Article Abstract:

Advocacy for a broad-based energy tax is expressed in lieu of the shared hostility of the general public. An analysis of the relation of US federal budget deficit to excess consumption financing was made to show that deficit elimination in the form of new taxes are necessary. It is asserted, however, that the nature of the new tax will be crucial. A broad-based consumtion tax, in the form of a value-added tax or a broad-based energy tax, are the options available.

The environment in the 21st century

Article Abstract:

Strong economic growth and increased profits are expected to increase individual company expenditures on pollution control equipment. Stricter and more stringent environmental laws will induce companies to be more concerned with the environment. Some companies will even target zero emissions as part of total quality management.
