'Sink or swim?' (teamworking in new product development)(Industrial Design in Practice)

Article Abstract:

New product development often originates from the idea of a single person but the launching of a marketable product is the result of teamwork. This requires the cooperation of consultants, in-house designers and engineers but this is often difficult because of their differences in views and objectives. Product development team members must remember that their efforts must be complementary instead of being competitive because successful teamwork depends on the application of the full range of skills of the members.

In from the cold

Article Abstract:

LEC Refrigeration PLC together with design consultant Grey Matter embarked on a product development project aimed at improving LEC's products and image. The project began with an evaluation of competitors' products and the carrying out of consumer surveys to determine the problems often encountered with refrigerators. Designers, engineers and marketing and manufacturing personnel then worked together to create a new product based on these data.

Look and feel

Article Abstract:

Non-destructive testing (NDT) allows product or material evaluation without affecting quality and future application. Thus, NDT is an integral and cost-effective component of the design or manufacturing process. The method also allows periodic inspections of materials currently in service or operation. NDT carries major applications in the aerospace, energy, food processing and electronics industries.
