Slower road for clean-car program

Article Abstract:

The NRC reported that the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, the automobile-development program forged between Pres Clinton and the US auto industry, will not be able to pick a winning technology in 1997, as planned. The goal is to produce a non-polluting car that will get 80 miles a gallon.

Serious setback for Patarroyo vaccine

Article Abstract:

SPf66, a synthetic malaria vaccine developed by Colombian biochemist Manuel Patarroyo, failed to demonstrate any effectiveness against the Plasmodium parasite. The mosquito-borne parasite, which kills over one million children worldwide each year, is extremely complexes and continues to elude control.

Tamoxifen's trials and tribulations

Article Abstract:

National Cancer Institute's $68-million study of tamoxifen is facing new problems just as it restarts following a six-month pause during which monitoring procedures were revamped. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute is reducing its funding, and California may list tamoxifen as a carcinogen.
