Support for science stays strong

Article Abstract:

Poll results indicate that although the American public strongly supports science and technology research efforts, it remains ignorant about basic scientific concepts and methods. Due to the widespread scientific ignorance, scientists fear that public support of science may be shallow.

The comfort zone

Article Abstract:

Scientists have entered an era in which comfort is no longer assured, as a new round of funding decisions always seems to be just around the corner. Scientists should make an effort to become more involved in community activities and to explain science's contribution to society.

From rhetoric to reality

Congress may cut federal funding of research in spite of a 1995 Harris poll that found strong public support for the importance of research and willingness to use taxes to fund it. Scientists must take the initiative in marshalling public action in support of science.
