Soil conservation in era of change

Article Abstract:

Many American farmers repeatedly abused and abandoned large tracts of land during the colonial period despite conservationists' pleas to conserve and protect the country's finite soil resources. The farmers' attitudes only changed during the late 19th and 20th centuries when the closure of the western frontier, the 'Great Depression,' and the 'Dust Bowl years' plunged millions of landowners into poverty. The Congress then introduced several conservation initiatives, such as the Special Areas Conservation Program, in hopes of lessening the rate of erosion on the country's agricultural lands.

Tending soil and water on German farm fields

Article Abstract:

The increased use of fertilizers and pesticides and the implementation of the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy has caused an increase in Europe's agricultural pollution and environmental degradation. Of prime concern is the contribution of nitrogen emissions, from nitrogen fertilizer, to soil acidification, depletion of the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect. In response to the environmental and agricultural pollution, the European community implemented several Environmental Action Programs in the 1970s which introduced measures for reducing and preventing pollution.

The earth's soil: neglected resource

Article Abstract:

Scientists and the public should pay more attention to the importance of preserving the quality of soil, which plays a vital role in providing food, clean air and water. Soil's natural qualities are increasingly being depleted by misuse and pollution. Food grown on such soil contain less nutrition and more life-threatening elements. The need to conserve soil is an urgent priority. Measures should be implemented in this regard and regular surveys should be conducted to deal with the world's soil. Maintenance of an error free soil health index can help towards this goal.
