Microbial Community Changes Associated with a Shift from Reductive Dechlorination of PCE to Reductive Dechlorination of cis-DCE and VC

Article Abstract:

Tetrachloroethene[PCE] used in dry cleaning and as a solvent is a serious groundwater pollutant. PCE reduces to ethene by an intermediate stage of cis-DCE and VC, a proven carcinogen. Microbial cultures in the study responded in different locations with different rates of activity and some with the ability to dechlorinate lesser ethenes. Analysis suggests that at least two populations in combination could completely dechlorinate PCE.

Sorption of selected organic compounds from water to a peat soil and its humic-acid and humin fractions: potential sources of the sorption nonlinearity

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the Denver Federal Center and Michigan State University measures the nonlinearity of ethylene dibromide, diuron and 3,5-dichlorophenol sorption isotherms from water on humic and humin fractions of peat and muck soil.

Growing concern over perfluorinated chemicals

Article Abstract:

The environmental and toxic affects of perfluorinated chemicals are not exactly know, but they do act like persistent organic pollutants. This has caused environmental scientists and regulators to seek answers in order to determine if the compounds are adversely impacting the environment. These efforts are discussed.
