Article Abstract:
Engineers of the Boeing Co designed a new composite payload fairing, which was used for the satellites contained in the Delta II that was scheduled for launch in 1998. Protecting the satellites from the thermal, aerodynamic and acoustic loads that come with launches, traditional composite payload fairings involve the assembly of more than 5,000 individual metallic details and over 50,000 fasteners. However, the Boeing engineers' new version was more cost-effective as its two half-cylinder shaped composite shells reduced the needed number of parts and fasteners and provided robustness for launch.
