What's in a title? It's all academic

Article Abstract:

Some Oxford academics believe that promotion to the title of professor should only be allowed in cases where the member of staff has undertaken particularly valuable research. Others believe that large-scale promotions would help to attract and retain staff and would reflect more flexible salary systems in other universities. No final decision has yet been made at Oxford, but more professors are being appointed at other institutions, especially those which have been transformed from a polytechnic into a university.
