Ford and other auto makers have begun to create proprietary diagnostic systems, which will speed fault location and repair but are restricted to dealerships and non-independent garages. In Britain, 70% of garages, or 15,000, are independent. California's emission laws, however, are forcing manufacturers to develop certain mutually compatible diagnostic systems, so the trend to franchise-specific systems may be short-lived.

Diode lasers are more popular than any other laser in the medical sector. Diode laser manufacturer Diomed is a rapidly expanding organization based in the United Kingdom. It has a significant presence in Europe and has launched a US sales initiative.
