The Institute of Spring Technology (IST) undertakes long term research programs into aspects of spring technology. The FRAC-MAT project considered material variability in wire, aimed at improving the quality and repeatability of formed spring components. Other IST projects are aimed at improving the knowledge of spring designers and users.

Researchers have found evidence that elastic mechanisms contribute to the wing movements of fruit flies. Calculations of the efficiency of fruit fly energy metabolism indicate that 90% of the kinetic energy of their wings is stored elastically.
