Straight and true

Article Abstract:

Most manufacturing processes use linear actuation based on pneumatics as an automation strategy owing to the technology's accuracy. Despite the fact that linear motion technologies are well-established in the manufacturing industry, they continue to be upgraded. For example, Festo offers a line of mechanically coupled rodless cylinders that provide greater efficiency at a lower cost when used as part of a proportional servo-pneumatic positioning system. Sims Engineering Systems has developed a machine that can perform ultrasonic welding of two mounting brackets to a range of plastic bumpers for Ford cars. The machine costs less than 60% of Ford's estimate for the three machines which were initially believed to be necessary.

Flow progress

Article Abstract:

Ingersoll-Dresser Pumps UK's CPXS seal-less magnetic drive pumps won the Pump of the Year and Innovation of the Year awards during the Pump & Systems '97 exhibit. CPXS pumps are a family of products created for the chemical industry. Magnetic drives, which are applied outside liquid containment chambers, allow the pumping of flammable, explosive and other substances while removing the risk of leakage and emissions due to seal failure.

Faster and better

Article Abstract:

The availability of wide range of tooling systems with applications to CNC lathes, machining centre, and similar machine tools helps in raising the industrial productivity. The use of gear driven tooling is increasingly becoming popular in Britain as it allows milling of flats, slots and grooves into a single machine set-up. The modular designs of tooling systems give wider flexibilities of applications.
