Strange matters: can advanced accelerators initiate runaway reactions?

Article Abstract:

Scientists are trying to ensure that an atomic collision does not result in a global meltdown, although this situation is unlikely. Atoms on the earth and cosmic particles have collided and created even more severe conditions than those occurring with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Vexing vortices: why a magnetic field is the enemy of superconductivity

Article Abstract:

Research about superconductivity is being stalled by problems when the high-temperature superconductors are overloaded with electric current or placed in a strong magnetic field. A vortex glass is being developed that may withstand high current and magnetic fields.
