Technology and environmental impact assessment: methods and synthesis

Article Abstract:

The separation between the practice of technology assessment (TA) and environmental impact assessment (EIA) is 'unnecessary and artificial' because both are interdependent strategic tools that share a common methodology albeit different methods of implementation. On the other hand, the two remain fundamentally different. This is because EIA or strategic environmental assessment is basically a reactive process whereas TA is a proactive process.

The role of technology assessment in technology policy

Article Abstract:

Technology assessment holds the key to the formulation of a proactive technology policy that will address the socioeconomic and political issues related to the deployment of new information and telecommunications technology. This is because it acts as the change agent that creates awareness, supports stakeholders in developing strategies and facilitates implementation at the national, sectorial and corporate levels.

Technology assessment - where is it going?

Article Abstract:

The previous articles on the current state of technology assessment (TA) show that the discipline addresses issues related to new technology deployment as well as supports the formulation of technology policy or or technology choice decisions. The practice of TA also underlies other areas of public concerns such as product liability cases, environmental impact assessments, and health and safety issues.
