Technology combination cuts DNAPL cleanup time at Superfund site

Article Abstract:

Scientists from the Dept of Energy's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Southern California Edison, have proven the feasibility of combining two remediation techniques to facilitate the removal of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) from groundwater reservoirs. The technology for DNAPL removal is a combination of dynamic underground stripping and hydrous pyrolysis/oxidation, involving the heating of the soil with steam and electrodes and the injection of oxygen in the soil which induces the mineralization of contaminants. The technique enables costs and time savings in soil remediation.

Rotating ion-exchange system removes perchlorate

Article Abstract:

The Calgon Carbon Corporation has developed a new water purification system that reduces perchlorate contamination. The Calgon technology relies on an ion-exchange method wherein a rotating countercurrent process removes perchlorate into a resin, resulting in less brine waste. A test of the system showed that incoming water with perchlorate contamination between 20 to 75 microgram/liter was purified to contain only perchlorate concentrations below 4 micrograms per liter, with brine waste between 0.5% to 1%. The system works well in conjunction with biological treatment and reverse osmosis.
