Better odds than the lottery

Article Abstract:

Many investors still engage in technical or fundamental analysis despite theories positing that all it takes to make successful investments are skills and luck. However, a recent study confirms that a detailed knowledge of basic accounting statistics and the policies employed to compile them do have investment value. Based on a sample of 120 major British companies analyzed for the years 1986 through 1996, the study found that the earnings forecast model used was able to correctly predict 69% of the future earnings changes. The implication is that fundamental analysis does not serve merely as a safety net but a rationale foundation for a sound investment decision. Indeed, investors can earn returns that exceed the market return by relying on accounting information.

The ethics of remediation

Article Abstract:

Conflicts can be observed between the ethics of the professional engineering practice and the ethics of the ecological practice. One area of difference is the age of practice. Engineering is an established profession with written codes and clear standards. The practice of ecology, on the other hand, started only in the 1960s. Internal cultural differences also exist between the two practices.
