The force of the future

Article Abstract:

Continuously or infinitely variable transmissions (CVT/IVT) are automatic gear systems that overcome the problem of large number of gears required in step-ratio transmission. Step-in ratio transmissions increase the efficiency of the engine and reduce oil consumption. CVTs and IVTs are similar in structure to manual layshaft transmissions. Transmission efficiency can be increased by using less-viscous oils and sealing the bearings involved in the transmission. Electronic-control systems using microprocessors improve safety features.

Modelling gear

Article Abstract:

Automobile manufacturer FFD-Ricardo ensures gearshift quality by using dynamic modeling processes. The company has established an objective technique of rating shift quality. Shift quality is considered to have three components: the force needed to change gears, the forces that effect the shift but are not directly related to synchronization torque, and the clarity of selection. The poor shift quality problems of nibble and double-bump were studied by dynamic modeling.

High-bred hybrid

Article Abstract:

Volvo Aero Turbines and ABB Hybrid Systems collaborated on the development of a high-performance hybrid drive featuring a gas turbine, generator and battery designed to comply with clean air regulations. The drive has been tested in two 15-ton concept vehicles to evaluate commercial mass-scale production of the system. The drive is considered the only realistic option to traditional IC engines.
