The linkage between IT and business strategy in competitive systems: a reappraisal of some 'classic' cases using a competition analysis framework

Article Abstract:

Eight well-known examples of how information technology (IT) has been used to enhance the competitive position of a corporate organization are analyzed. These examples are taken from three industries: airlines, distribution and financial services. The experience of the eight companies whose IT policies were used for strategic positioning purposes are also discussed with reference to Porter's competition framework. Analysis shows that the IT applications profiled were developed incidentally to solve operational problems and were not part of a comprehensive strategic plan.

Inter-organizational systems planning: learning from current practices

Article Abstract:

Planning for inter-organizational information systems (IOS) is important yet planning aspects of such systems have not been adequately considered in the rush to introduce co-operative systems and because information system researchers have yet to furnish guidelines for IOS planning. A study of the nature and degree of IOS planning in the UK and Ireland will show that IOS planning is still in its infancy despite a mean of five years' experience in such planning.
