The next generation: New superconducting wires come closer to market

Article Abstract:

The promise of turning high-temperature superconductors into commercial reality has given way to high-temperature superconductor technology involving wires made of the elements bismuth, strontium, calcium, copper and oxygen (BSCCO). A second generation of wires, composed of yttrium, Barium, copper and oxygen with its superconducting qualities in stronger magnetic fields is set to overtake BSCCO.

The shapes of space

Article Abstract:

Henri Poincare, a French mathematician, proves that conjecture holds that the 3-sphere is unique among 3-manifolds and no other 3-manifold shares the properties that make it so simple. Answers to the fundamental questions that topologists can ask about 3-manifolds is discussed.
