The road from Rio

Article Abstract:

The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was characterized by remarkable achievements and at least one notable failure. The Summit was successful in that it attracted 118 heads of state, more than any conference to date. More significantly, two binding treaties were drafted: the climate change convention and the biodiversity convention, although these accomplishments were marred by US reservations about both. The major failure of the conference was the refusal of conference participants to discuss the issue of overpopulation.

Heralding Israels' environmental consciousness

Article Abstract:

Since 1982 the Israel Environmental Protection Service and Ministry of Environment (MOE) have influenced development planning. For example, the MOE has introduced 16 laws regulating environmental protection. In 1983 a land use plan for Mediterranean coastline development was established. The need to conserve resources underlies environmental policy. Innovative schemes such as irrigation with wastewater have developed in response to water shortages.
