The status of environmental management in Israel

Article Abstract:

Since the 1970s Israel has implemented an environmental management policy for sustainable economic development. The Israel Environmental Protection Service (EPS) ensures environmental considerations are incorporated into land-use planning and prevents environmental degredation. Environmental needs are balanced against the need for economic development. A multi-disciplinary approach is applied to problem solving and environmentalists emphasise the need for a cooperative approach. Polluters must pay for environmental damage.

How Israel handles the environment and development

Article Abstract:

The Israel Environmental Protection Service was established in the 1970s in response to environmental pressures from rapid population expansion and economic development. Its function was to facilitate economic development without damage to the environment. The service adopted a conciliatory and advisory approach. It emphasised the importance of incorporating environmental considerations into planning. Since the 1980s the service has had a formative influence on all planning development.

Protecting coastal resources: a planned solution in Israel and Eastern Mediterranean countries

Article Abstract:

Since the 1970s Israel has implemented a policy of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). ICZM must balance considerations of urban use, tourism and environmental protection. About 70% of the population lives in the coastal strip. A land-use planning system regulates on and off-shore development. Environmental impact assessment is statutory.
