Too radical for NIH? Try DARPA

Article Abstract:

Although DARPA has never funded biological research before, the agency plans to spend $40 million to $50 million on biodefense research in 1997 and as much as $100 million by 1999. Funding biological warfare defense research is a high priority for DARPA Dir Larry Lynn.

Outcry shoots down funding reform

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation has postponed a plan to test its reform of university research funding following protests from universities. The reform is a flat budget system that would award grants covering overhead as well as salaries and equipment.

Senate restores NIH funding cut

Article Abstract:

Sen Mark Hatfield led the effort to rescind a proposal that would have cut NIH funding by 10%. Nondefense discretionary accounts such as general sciences, energy and natural resources will be taxed to compensate for NIH's funding restoration.
