Tool changes

Article Abstract:

The total UK trade deficit for machine tools was 155.3 million pounds sterling by the end of Sep 1997 in contrast to a deficit of 64.9 million pounds sterling in the same period during 1996. This indicates a frightening rise in the trade deficit within the UK's machine tool industry. The cause of the increasing trade deficit is identified as the rise in prices of UK machines which has made it difficult to compete against the country's major rivals. Some companies resort to discounting to maintain their market share to ensure that they can still export their machines.

Force of attraction

Article Abstract:

Magnets can be made of different kinds of materials and have a wide range of shapes. Materials used include sintered neodymium iron boron which provide the highest magnetic energy per unit volume, sintered samarium cobalt which has good high temperature stability, and anisotropic sintered ferrite which is employed for low cost, small components. The market for permanent magnets has been globalized with customers requiring product quality, speed of delivery and improved performance.
