British Aerospace's Military Aircraft Division is facing increasing competition through several strategies. The company is maintaining its design capabilities in areas that include aerodynamic technologies, materials development and systems integration. It has also implemented a program that will ensure the career progression of its engineers to minimize turnover rates. The company has also created a task force that is aiming to create an integrated approach into product development.

Article Abstract:

It has been necessary to assemble a wide range of high performance support equipment for the ThrustSSC supersonic car, which has undertaken test runs in Jordan and will attempt to break the world land speed record in the US. Air transport to the US will take place on an Antonov AN124 provided by transport airline Heavylift-Volga-Dnepre. The support team will include two Scania 144 tractor units, a full 40 ft 'pit' trailer and a Tiltec trailer for transporting the car itself.

Consultant Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath's (PRTM) 1997 survey of high technology companies showed that product development is the key to success. Companies with effective product development strategies reduce their time to market by 30%, enjoy revenue growth rates three times faster than other firms and quicker return on investment. One company's implementation of PRTM's Product & Cycle-time product development framework is discussed.
