Article Abstract:

Manufacturing firms must endeavor to combine maximum quality and maintenance in their production processes. Nissan Motor Manufacturing has adopted predictive maintenance as a tool for combining machine knowledge, minimum downtime and high quality. Renishaw's laser calibration was used to set each machine tool and fixture used in the production line to a nominal condition. This was done to ensure the high quality of the components produced. Vickers Defence Systems uses a laser-calibrated ballbar to measure the radial deviation form the machine's programmed path, thus ensuring quality production.

Benchmarking is a three-stage process for evaluating a company's performance and an aid in helping a firm achieve world-class status. It starts with the use of self-assessment techniques to determine a company's practices and procedures which are then compared with the same aspects of other firms to reveal relative weaknesses and strengths. This is followed by the implementation of improvement programs based on the results of the previous stages. The process is increasing in popularity as an essential business development tool.
