Managing a megaproject

Article Abstract:

The Arrowhead East and West Tunnels are the first part of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's plan for a $1.2 billion Inland Feeder water-delivery project. The management decisions for the execution of the megaproject have focused on the involvement of three different consultant teams for each of the project's three tunnel segments. This has complicated the coordination aspect of the designing. Metropolitan has developed a uniform seismic design criteria and plans to develop 72 acres of land as animal habitat to decrease the effect on San Jacinto Wildlife Reserve.

Sky high

Article Abstract:

The advent of digital television and the increasing use of cellular phones is leading to an increased demand for telecommunications towers and poles. Civil engineers involved in this sort of work are constantly developing new techniques and evolving practices to keep up with technological developments. They are also addressing safety issues connected with loading extra antennae on existing towers, and developing methods of disguising towers, or making them more attractive, in an attempt to address public resistance to towers.
