Trace metal adsorption onto an acid mine drainage iron(III) oxy hydroxy sulfate

Article Abstract:

The ability of the MINTEQA2 chemical speciation model to accurately predict trace metal absorption in natural systems have been shown to be deficient in predicting trace metal absorption in iron-rich acid mine drainage systems. An examination of the absorption edges for Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd showed that trace metal adsorption in iron-rich acid mine drainage systems was enhanced by such factors as the ability of the substrate to form ternary complexes between the oxidesurface, adsorbed SO4 and the metal ion, as well as the role of bacterial action in enhancing trace metal absorption.

Repair avoidance and evaluating inspection and maintenance programs

Article Abstract:

Carbon Monoxide emissions regulations in Denver, Colorado require motor vehicles to undergo state inspection and maintenance tests (IM). The test, which is intended to deter motorists from neglecting proper vehicle maintenance, is being circumvented by some owners who register cars outside the project. The state implemented a new program in 1995 called IM240 which was shown to improve carbon monoxide emissions in odd-model-year vehicles from 1983 to 1993 and vehicles purchased before October 1994.
